Le maninka du Niokolo

(Sénégal oriental), esquisse phonologique et morphosyntaxique, liste lexicale, textes glosés
The Niokolo Maninka (Eastern Senegal): A sketch of phonology and morphosyntax, a lexicon and glossed texts
Манинка р-на Ньоколо (восточный Сенегал): очерк фонологии и морфосинтаксиса, с приложением списка слов и глоссированных текстов

Niokolo Maninka is a Manding variety spoken in East Senegal, in a zone situated 30-50 km North of Kédougou. It is clearly distinct from both the other Manding varieties of Eastern Senegal and from Mandinka as spoken in Middle Casamance, The Gambia, and Guinea Bissau. This sketch includes a description of segmental phonology, tonology, and morphosyntax, a bibliography, a wordlist, glossed texts, and an index.

The tone system is the most original aspect of this Manding variety. It can be described as based on an underlying H vs. Ø contrast, with a ban on H tone adjacency and very limited spreading processes, and the underlying H tones of Niokolo Maninka broadly correspond to L tones in Manding varieties such as Sédhiou Mandinka, Kankan Maninka, or Standard Bambara. All aspects of morphosyntax are addressed, with a special emphasis on points of a particular relevant for dialectal comparison.
